Sotto il comando della Santa Regina Calca, il Santo Regno di Roble ha vissuto un periodo di pace, protetto da grandi mura. L'idillio presto svanisce quando fa la sua comparsa Jaldabaoth e vengono attaccati dall'Alleanza dei semiumani. Il Gran Maestro dei Paladini del Regno, Remedios, e l'Alta Sacerdotessa Kelart, radunano le loro forze per respingere l'attacco, ma non sono in grado di avere la meglio sulle grandi forze di Jaldabaoth: il regno rischia nuovamente la distruzione. Remedios, Kelart e la sua sottoposta intraprendono un viaggio verso il regno dello stregone Ainz Ooal Gown, per cercare il potere che li aiuterà nella lotta contro il nemico. Ma questa nazione è strana, ed è governata da un non-morto non molto ben visto da quelli del Santo Regno.

Nelle assolate praterie dell’Andalusia è appena nato un vitellino. In un paesino avvolto nella nebbia della Pianura padana il giovane figlio di un’impresaria di pompe funebri sogna di diventare un torero. Fandango e Matteo crescono in mondi molto diversi eppure le loro vite si rispecchiano l’una nell’altra. Entrambi lasceranno l’infanzia per diventare adolescenti e poi adulti, sperimentando le stesse gioie e le stesse sofferenze della crescita: la perdita della madre, l’amicizia e la solitudine, la lotta per la sopravvivenza, la morte che li circonda. Solo alla fine i due s’incontreranno nell’arena di fronte a centinaia di persone.
