Tenchi Masaki era un normalissimo studente giapponese di 17 anni fino al giorno in cui incoscientemente libera la bellissima piratessa spaziale Ryoko, da una caverna in cui era stata sigillata 700 anni prima dato che era considerata un demone. Per una serie di eventi, altre quattro ragazze aliene (la principessa Ayeka e la sua sorellina Sasami, la scienziata Washu Hakubi e la svampita poliziotta intergalattica Mihoshi Kuramitsu) arriveranno in casa Masaki, facendo scoprire al ragazzo dettagli sulla propria provenienza che lui stesso non sapeva assolutamente di avere. The Old Oak è un posto speciale. Non è solo l'ultimo pub rimasto, è anche l'unico luogo pubblico in cui la gente può incontrarsi in quella che un tempo era una fiorente località mineraria e che oggi attraversa momenti molto duri, dopo 30 anni di ininterrotto declino. Il proprietario del pub, TJ Ballantyne (Dave Turner) riesce a mantenerlo a stento, e la situazione si fa ancora più precaria quando The Old Oak diventa territorio conteso dopo l'arrivo dei rifugiati siriani trasferiti nel villaggio. Stabilendo un'improbabile amicizia, TJ si lega ad una giovane siriana, Yara (Ebla Mari). Riusciranno le due comunità a trovare un modo di comunicare?

Nel 1999, una ciclopica astronave aliena si schianta su Macross, un'isola della Terra. Dallo studio di questo eccezionale artefatto, gli scienziati terrestri ottengono conoscenze tecnologiche piuttosto avanzate, che portano alla costruzione di nuovi mezzi bellici come i caccia trasformabili VF-1 Varitech (soprannominati anche Valkyrie) ed al ripristino della stessa astronave aliena (ribattezzata, in seguito, SDF-1, Super Dimensional Fortress 1). Durante la cerimonia d'inaugurazione della nave, il popolo alieno dei giganteschi Zentradi attacca l'isola ed i suoi abitanti. Un pilota acrobatico, Rick Hunter, sale a bordo di un aereo militare (un caccia Valkyrie) e viene suo malgrado coinvolto nel combattimento (schiantandosi infine, sulla casa di una giovane ragazza, Lynn Minmay). Le forze aliene sono così superiori a quelle terrestri che e il comandante dell'SDF-1, Henry Gloval, ordina di compiere un salto iperspaziale, che trasferisce la fortezza spaziale e, come effetto collaterale, anche gran parte dell'isola di Macross e le due navi da guerra Daedalus e Prometeus, in prossimità di Plutone. La gigantesca astronave diventa così una vera città spaziale, in cui i superstiti dell'incidente vivono sotto la costante minaccia degli Zentradi, i quali, localizzata la nave ne inseguono la scia.

The Earth is invaded by a race of aliens calling themselves the Invid. They have come to the Earth to cultivate its vast supplies of Protoculture, a multipurpose energy source & foodstuff, which is of prime importance to their race. Without Protoculture, the Invid Colony could wither and die. With enough, their race could grow and become the most powerful in the universe. Their invasion & conquest of the Earth is swift and complete. A huge interstellar fleet is sent to Earth by Admiral Rick Hunter to appraise the situation and test the strengths of this new alien threat.
