Il giovane Yuru vive cacciando in un remoto villaggio di montagna, mentre sua sorella gemella Asa è rinchiusa da tempo in una sorta di prigione. Un giorno, un gruppo di uomini armati a bordo di elicotteri, definiti "draghi" dai cittadini, assalta il villaggio alla ricerca di Yuru, uccidendo tutti gli altri. Il ragazzo cerca sua sorella, trovando un cadavere, mentre la persona che l'ha uccisa afferma di essere la vera sorella gemella di Yuru. Fuggito grazie all'aiuto di Dera, un estraneo spesso in visita al villaggio, Yuru scoprirà lentamente la verità nascosta dietro a quanto accaduto.

Rei Hitoma è un ex insegnante che, per motivi legati a traumi passati, ha sviluppato una profonda misantropia e un'avversione verso gli esseri umani. Dopo due anni di inattività, decide di accettare un nuovo incarico in una scuola remota, immersa nella natura, sperando di trovare un'esistenza tranquilla e lontana dagli altri. Ma il suo primo giorno di lavoro lo coglie di sorpresa: incontra uno studente con orecchie da animale! Scopre così che la scuola in cui è approdato non ospita studenti comuni, ma "demi umani", esseri non del tutto umani che desiderano diventarlo. Da questa premessa nasce una strana situazione: un uomo che disprezza l’umanità si trova ad insegnare agli altri… che significato abbia la “umanità”.

Mentre la madre single fronteggia i debiti gestendo un chiosco in un vivace mercato notturno e la sorella maggiore contribuisce con un lavoretto part-time, la bambina esplora con meraviglia la nuova vita cittadina: le strade, le bancarelle, le luci della metropoli. Ma perché disegna con la mano sinistra? Il nonno non vuole, dice che quella è una mano malvagia. Questo singolare divieto darà il via a una serie di vicende incredibili e inaspettate: con quella mano, I-Jing arriverà a ribaltare le sorti della sua famiglia e a sfiorare un segreto ben custodito.
