Il film segue la storia di Sue Ann o Ma (Octavia Spencer), una donna sola che fa amicizia con un gruppo di adolescenti e offre ai ragazzi la possibilità di ubriacarsi nel seminterrato di casa sua. Ci sono tuttavia alcune regole da rispettare; uno di loro chiamarla... “Ma”. Mentre l’ospitalità di Ma inizia a sfociare nell’ossessione, quello che è iniziato come il sogno di alcuni adolescenti si trasforma in un incubo terrorizzante, e quello offerto da Ma passa dal miglior posto in città al peggior posto sulla Terra.

Naofumi Iwatani è un otaku che spende tutto il suo tempo in giochi e fumetti, almeno fin quando non si trova improvvisamente evocato in un universo parallelo. Scopre quindi di essere uno dei quattro eroi in possesso delle armi leggendarie, i quali hanno il compito di salvare il mondo dalla distruzione della profezia. Naofumi è "L'eroe dello scudo", il più debole, e si ritrova quindi solo e tradito, con la sola compagnia del suo scudo. Ora Naofumi deve risorgere, diventare un vero eroe e salvare il mondo.

Lo sfortunato si reincarna in un altro mondo nel corpo di un neonato orfano, il quale viene ritrovato in una foresta dal mago Merlin Wolford, detto il saggio. L'uomo lo prende con sé e gli dà come nome Shin. Il ragazzo viene cresciuto da Merlin come se fosse il suo stesso nipote. Shin è dotato di innate straordinarie abilità magiche e sotto la guida di Merlin, acquisisce un enorme potere. Quando però il ragazzo raggiunge i 15 anni, Merlin ammette di avergli insegnato tutto tranne che il senso comune, avendolo allevato in una foresta lontano da coetanei e dalla città. Ora è giunto il momento di far conoscere a Shin la società e di inviarlo all'accademia di magia.
