Per Hikari Tsutsui, la vita nel regno bidimensionale è molto più semplice. Socialmente inetto e goffo, si immerge nei videogiochi e negli anime, solo per essere inesorabilmente ridicolizzato e ostracizzato dai suoi compagni di classe. A condividere la sua sofferenza c'è Yuuto Itou, il suo unico amico, che indossa le orecchie da gatto ed è ugualmente ossessionato dal mondo dei giochi. Dopo essere stato costretto a pulire la piscina come punizione per essere arrivato in ritardo, Tsutsui incontra Iroha Igarashi, ma tenta di evitarla, poiché la sua notorietà la precede.
