Ogni anima ha una sola settimana per decidere dove e con chi trascorrere l’eternità. Ma per alcuni, anche dopo una vita intera, il cuore può essere ancora indeciso. Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) e Larry (Miles Teller), sposati da decenni, muoiono a pochi giorni di distanza l’uno dall’altra, dopo un’esistenza condivisa tra affetto, abitudini e piccole incomprensioni quotidiane. Il loro incontro nell’aldilà dovrebbe essere sereno e scontato, dopotutto, hanno costruito insieme un’intera esistenza fatta di compromessi e fedeltà silenziosa. Ma quando Joan arriva in questa sorta di stazione di transito ultraterrena, dove tutti ritornano nell’aspetto e nell’età della loro fase più felice, trova ad attenderla Luke (Callum Turner), il suo primo marito, morto giovanissimo nella guerra di Corea. Luke l’ha aspettata per 67 anni, convinto che il loro legame, interrotto troppo presto, meritasse una seconda possibilità. Ora, Joan si trova sospesa tra due amori profondamente diversi: la passione idealizzata e interrotta della giovinezza e l’intimità costruita nel tempo di un matrimonio duraturo.
