His songwriting, singing, and guitar playing all stand out as both exceptional and versatile. Now in a later phase of his evolution, he's moved away from the exploratory nature of his early and mid-career albums; like other recent Thopmson albums, Ship to Shore focuses on presenting a new set of his amazing songs and delivery, with a balance of cohesion and variety. Thompson's solo albums since his debut in 1972-a year after leaving Fairport Convention- through the '90s, emphasized his collaboration with production and engineering teams. On 1974's Henry the Human Fly and the classic Richard & Linda Thompson albums that followed it, producer Joe Boyd encouraged John Wood's beautiful mixes to shine. Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake brought a decade of their unusual keyboards and inventive mix ideas starting with 1986's Daring Adventures. This chapter ends with Rob Schnapf and Tom Rothrock's 1999 work on Mock Tudor, coupling simpler arrangements with crisp elements of '90s alt-rock. Since 2003's The Old Kit Bag, Thompson's albums of new songs have had more straightforward production and mixes, even on albums with prominent musicians like Buddy Miller and Jeff Tweedy as producers. Drummer Michael Jerome has worked with Thompson since The Old Kit Bag, and Taras Prodaniuk joined on bass for 2007's Sweet Warrior. While songs on Ship to Shore vary in volume, tempo, and arrangement, they generally fall in the middle of his dynamic and emotional range. The album's highest peaks-"Maybe" and "Turnstile Casanova"-never approach the blistering catharsis of "Shoot Out the Lights." The acoustic arrangement that starts "Singapore Sadie" and the jazz-informed tonality of "Life's a Bloody Show" still pair with rock elements with more visceral punch than Thompson's acoustic hits like "Beeswing" or "Vincent Black Lightning 1952." The combination of electric guitar and rock drums with fiddle and acoustic guitar gives the album a versatile tonal palette, as these elements take turns in the foreground. Like any Richard Thompson album, the guitar solos emphasize some key emotional highlights. He builds his songs around simple repeating guitar parts, with lyrical narratives defining their structure and development. These melodies and stories form repeating sections-often with alternating parts that function as unconventional verses and choruses-that stretch to lengths beyond conventional rock songs. Dawson's vocals display impressive dexterity, alternating between a reedy, speech-like tenor and a higher register for melodic sections. While "Knot" features bombastic drumming and distorted guitar, most of End of the Middle surrounds Dawson's unique writing and singing with sparer arrangements. His impressive storytelling, which attracts devoted fans who memorize these complex narratives and sing along at his concerts, is highly detailed. Opener "Bolt" is the tale of a house being struck by lightning that begins with the context of mundane activities: "I'm in the hall on the phone/ Jen's in her room watching neighbors." Once lightning strikes, the wordplay gains a richness ("Cacophony of barking dog and burglar alarm/ A scorch mark in the center of my trembling palm") and the guitar and drums build in intensity to match the obvious stress in the home. "Boxing Day Sales" places the narrator and his friend under a store's awning on a frigid December day. A phrase in his conversation turns into a slant rhyme: "Are things any better between you and Tom/ I'm so tired of hearing these awful Christmas songs." Final track "More than real" leaps from the conventions that precede it. A keyboard replaces the guitar in creating the song's structure and tonality, and it's an unexpected duet between Dawson and Sally Pilkington's female voice. This reissue comes with brand new artwork that was commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Richard's children and managers of his estate. This time, the unidentified person in bright red shorts is swimming within deep blue waters of the sea rather than a pool and the image expands out to reveal a boat slightly out of their reach, referencing the nautical theme of the record. The image was taken by Costas Spathis, a photographer living and working in Greece, which is where the album was written and the graphic design is by Carl Glover. When originally released, post Pink Floyd's ANIMALS (1977) and shortly before THE WALL (1979), WET DREAM was largely under-appreciated. Steven Wilson's mix gives new life to the record demonstrating Wright's brilliance. He wrote and produced the whole album himself and it was one of only three albums released outside of Pink Floyd - BROKEN CHINA, his second solo album from 1996 and IDENTITY, released in 1983 under the guise of Zee, a duet with Dave Harris from Fashion. The blu-ray is presented in a blu-ray-sized book format with soft touch lamination and comes with four collectible postcards and an 8-page concertina booklet.
