Sherlock Holmes lo salva avventurosamente e lo porta con sé a Londra, ma Tobel, temendo che il congegno possa essere trafugato, preferisce affidarne la produzione a quattro scienziati di sua fiducia, il nome dei quali, sconosciuto alle stesse autorità, è affidato ad un ingegnoso codice crittografato. Ciascuno degli scienziati lavora su una determinata sezione del progetto ignorando l'attività degli altri, e quando Tobel viene rapito dal professor Moriarty che intende vendere l'invenzione al Terzo Reich, Holmes lotta contro il tempo per decifrare il codice e sottrarre le quattro sezioni del progetto dalle mani del nemico.
