In contrasto con l'attuale tendenza di molti giovani registi a realizzare film dell'orrore dai facili e prevedibili spaventi, The Lodgers sceglie la via più antica dell'atmosfera e della fiaba psicanalitica, ambientata in una location affascinante e nel periodo storico del primo dopoguerra. Non si tratta nemmeno di una classica ghost-story e poco viene spiegato, lasciando ai (bravi) giovani protagonisti che interpretano i gemelli condannati a non lasciare mai la loro fatiscente dimora sul lago e a rispettare una serie di regole, il compito di trasmettere le ansie, le angosce e la frustrazione legate alla loro condizione di vita. Un film tutto europeo, consigliato soprattutto a chi a questo genere chiede suggestioni visive più che emozioni forti e spiegazioni facili.
