Siamo a Parigi alle soglie del 1900. La Terza Repubblica è in crisi, il governo è pressato dai nazionalisti e dalle forze anti-semite, ma anche dagli anarchici. A complicare la situazione la morte improvvisa del presidente Felix Faure.

Mentre il paese precipita un giovane e ambizioso detective Antoine Jouin viene chiamato a indagare quando nella Senna riemerge il torso di una giovane donna. Nel corso delle sue indagini il detective incontra anche figure realmente esistite come Louis Lepine, il prefetto in pensione che venne chiamato a riportare l’ordine, Jeanne Chauvine, la seconda donna a ottenere licenza per alcolici e Meg Steinheil una famosa cortigiana e informatrice della polizia.

Le indagini di Antoine lo porteranno a scoprire un misterioso colpo di stato orchestrato per far saltare la Repubblica, legato al caso su cui lui sta indagando, dando vita così a una serie che mescola il crime con la storia.
