True Detective è una serie televisiva statunitense creata ed interamente scritta da Nic Pizzolatto. Trasmessa dal 2014 da HBO e divenuta subito serie dell'anno, ha stravolto i canoni tradizionali del poliziesco e rivestendoli di un'estetica torbida e di una sensibilità esistenzialista. L'atmosfera noir forgiata dai modelli hollywoodiani è tradotta con un linguaggio inedito e affascinante. Se in quei classici d'epoca la caccia a un criminale realistico era fondata su un girato dalle tinte astratte, dove il gioco dei chiaroscuri risentiva fortemente del modello espressionista, in True Detective la situazione è ribaltata: l'inseguimento di un serial killer si tramuta nella battaglia impari contro un'entità occulta, mentre la trattazione dell'immagine tende ai toni di uno scabro realismo.
