Trama:
Un professionista del crimine, Neil McCauley (De Niro), riesce a cavarsela da ogni situazione in meno di trenta secondi. La sua banda, fatta di tre rapinatori deboli e violenti. Un poliziotto-segugio, Vincent Hanna (Pacino), fallito nei sentimenti e implacabile nella professione. Quando McCauley e compagni assaltano e rapinano un furgone blindato uccidendo tre agenti, il poliziotto si lancia sulle loro tracce e riesce a identificarli. Ormai sa tutto di loro; si tratta solo di incastrarli. Comincia un lungo e teso gioco tra gatto e topo, nella preparazione del drammatico scontro finale. Pacino e De Niro per la prima volta faccia a faccia: cacciatore e preda in un gioco a rimpiattino durante il quale tra i due cresce uno strano legame istintivo. Centosettanta minuti di tensione profonda e dettagliata, occhi e storie che si raccontano una comune disperata precarietà. Fino a trasformare una classica sfida cinematografica in un affresco umano tristissimo, esausto, disilluso.
