Sviluppato da Vigil Games per THQ, Darksiders II non si pone come un vero e proprio sequel rispetto al primo episodio, bensì come una vicenda che si svolge parallelamente.

In questo caso il protagonista è Morte, il secondo dei quattro Cavalieri dell'Apocalisse ad apparire nella serie, che viene informato della condotta di suo fratello Guerra dall'Arso Consiglio ma non crede neanche per un attimo che sia stato capace di rompere il sigillo e determinare così la distruzione della razza umana.

Morte si mette dunque in viaggio, intenzionato ad attraversare i pericolosi territori che si frappongono tra Inferno e Paradiso, con l'obiettivo di scagionare Guerra e scoprire chi è il vero responsabile di un'Apocalisse che non doveva verificarsi.

La struttura di Darksiders II si distingue dal gioco originale per via di una serie di luoghi in cui il nostro Cavaliere può interagire con altri personaggi e decidere se iniziare una quest, muovendosi poi all'interno di scenari che vantano dimensioni doppie rispetto al primo Darksiders. Differenti anche le capacità offensive di Morte rispetto a Guerra: laddove il secondo si poneva come un soldato fedele, determinato e forte, Morte è dotato di abilità quasi animalesche, di una maggiore agilità e di un'arma (la ben nota falce) che si presta agli usi più disparati, rivelandosi però sempre letale.
