Alla morte del padre, Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey) diventa il responsabile della compagnia mineraria della famiglia, che è prossima al fallimento a causa dei debiti. Kenny cerca disperatamente nuovi investitori e l'appoggio delle banche senza ottenere risultati. L'unica che sembra sostenerlo è la fidanzata Kay (Bryce Dallas Howard). La svolta per l'attività mineraria arriva grazie all'incontro con il geologo Michael Acosta (Edgar Ramírez), che convince Wells a spostare gli scavi in Borneo, dove è certo che si trovino grandi giacimenti d'oro. A corto di soldi, Kenny impegna alcuni gioielli e l'orologio donato anni prima a Kay per acquistare il biglietto di un volo diretto in Indonesia. Giunto a Jakarta, l'uomo incontra Michael che gli spiega che i giacimenti sono momentaneamente in mano ad un'impresa canadese che non riesce a far fronte ai costi e alle tangenti richieste dal corrotto governo indonesiano. Kenny promette di recuperare sufficiente denaro grazie al coinvolgimento di nuovi investitori. Dopo aver racimolato una discreta cifra, Wells torna in Indonesia e convince il Ministro degli Interni a concedergli i permessi per iniziare gli scavi nella proprietà di Busang. Secondo gli studio di Michael, infatti, è lì che si trova una grande quantità d'oro. Quando i monsoni flagellano la regione e i lavoratori si rifiutano di rischiare la loro vita dal momento che gli scavi non danno frutti, Wells dovrà sfoderare tutto il suo carisma per evitare la bancarotta...
