Trama:
La Demeter, goletta battente bandiera russa, sta trasportando dalla Carpazia a Londra un carico privato - ventiquattro casse di legno senza segni distintivi - tanto prezioso quanto misterioso. All'arrivo sulle coste inglesi, però, le autorità trovano la nave spopolata. Rimane solo il cadavere del capitano, legato alla ruota del timone con ancora stretto in mano un crocifisso.
