Questo OAV è stato realizzato da Makoto Shintai con mezzi piuttosto poveri, ovvero il suo Machintosh . L'autore realizzava già cortometraggi, ma con Hoshi no Koe ha deciso di fare sul serio, lasciando il suo lavoro e dedicandosi alla sua realizzazzione a tempo pieno. In seguito arrivò Mangazoo che decise di finaziare il progetto per quanto riguardava la colonna sonora.
La realizzazzione di questo OAV è durata ben 2 anni, e il risultato è davvero sorprendente. La prima versione ("Director's Version") è stata persino doppiata con mezzi propri: il cast era formato dallo stesso autore e dalla sua ragazza. Poi per l'uscita in DVD è stata affiancata a questa versione "amatoriale" doppiata da un cast professionista ("Voice Actor's Version").

Trama
Quando la nave spaziale Lysithea inizia il suo viaggio a caccia dei Tarsians, temibili alieni incontrati per la prima volta su Marte, la studentessa Mikako Nagamine viene arruolata tra le forze terrestri. L'unico mezzo che ha per parlare con il suo ragazzo rimasto sulla Terra, Noboru Terao, è via e-mail. Ma più la nave spaziale si allontana dalla Terra, più tempo impiegano i messaggi spediti ad arrivare a destinazione.
