La storia di quattro sorelle giapponesi negli anni '70, mentre affrontano ognuna i propri problemi familiari, dopo la scoperta che il loro padre ha tradito la madre.

Protagoniste della serie Netflix diretta da Hirokazu Kore'eda sono quattro sorelle, molto unite e allo stesso tempo molto litigiose, la cui quotidianità viene scombussolata dalla scoperta che il padre ha avuto una relazione extraconiugale e un figlio fuori dal matrimonio. Siamo nel Giappone degli anni '70 e non era una pratica così fuori dall'ordinario: la primogenita infatti ha una relazione con un uomo sposato; la seconda è quella sposata con figli ma è convinta che il marito la tradisca; la terzogenita è l'eterna single che ha assunto un investigatore per indagare sul padre; mentre la più giovane convive segretamente con un aspirante pugile che aspetta la grande occasione per sfondare. Tra alti e bassi, la loro vita non sarà più la stessa.
