In Avatar 3, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) e i figli Lo'ak, Tuk e Kiri sono ancora ospiti del clan acquatico dei Metkayina, ma non c'è serenità: la morte di Neteyam (Jamie Flatters) pesa sui cuori di tutti. Spider (Jack Champion), diverso tra i Na'vi, nonostante abbia ripudiato gli esseri umani e si senta parte della famiglia, rimane il figlio naturale del Colonnello Quaritch (Stephen Lang): l'avatar di quest'ultimo è di nuovo in forma, ancora in caccia del disertore rivoluzionario Jake per conto della RDA, ma anche a suo modo affezionato a Spider, che rivorrebbe con sé, spinto da un impulso ambiguo. Nel tentativo di proteggere la propria famiglia (nonché Spider e gli ospitali Metkayna) da ulteriori sicure incursioni, Jake decide di allontanarsi con loro. Il tragitto però riserva un traumatico imprevisto: l'impatto con lo spietato clan del fuoco, i Mangkwan, noti per crudeltà e disciplina ferrea. Loro capo è Varang (Oona Chaplin), una Na'vi in grado di gestire le fiamme, priva di ogni senso etico, a differenza degli altri clan.
