Cinque ragazze del club di letteratura di una scuola superiore. Un giorno le protagoniste cominciano a discutere di un romanzo in cui l'eroina è destinata a morire giovane, nasce spontanea la domanda: "cosa vorresti fare prima di morire?". Una di loro risponde seria, riflessiva e per nulla scomposta: "fare sesso". Il caos emozionale che scatena l'apparentemente innocua risposta, spinge ciascuna delle ragazze verso nuove esperienze, verso la crescita e l'età adulta.

Vole è accusato di aver assassinato una ricca vedova. Il testamento dell'uccisa, steso pochi giorni prima della sua morte, costituisce erede di una notevole sostanza il presunto assassino. La situazione di Vole è resa ancora più delicata dall'atteggiamento ambiguo della moglie Christine, una tedesca, ch'egli, inglese, ha incontrato ad Amburgo ed ha sposato durante l'ultima guerra. Il caso di Vole interessa vivamente un celebre avvocato, sir Wilfred Roberts, il quale, convinto dell'innocenza dell'imputato, malgrado la sua età non più giovane e le sue precarle condizioni di salute, ne assume la difesa.

Nicholas Brody, un sergente dei Marine ritenuto scomparso in azione nella guerra d'Iraq, viene liberato dopo otto anni di prigionia. Una volta ritornato a casa, l'intera nazione lo elegge immediatamente ad eroe di guerra. Carrie Mathison, un'analista della CIA, è l'unica a credere che in realtà egli rappresenti una seria minaccia per il Paese: identifica infatti in Brody uno sconosciuto prigioniero di guerra americano che ha saputo essersi convertito all'Islam ed essere passato al servizio di al-Qaida. Rendendosi conto delle difficoltà di provare la sua tesi e di convincere i suoi superiori a mettere sotto sorveglianza il sergente, Carrie inizia ad indagare segretamente sulla figura di Nicholas Brody, per prevenire un altro attacco terroristico sul suolo americano.

In realtà Shawn non è affatto un sensitivo, ma presenta delle facoltà intuitive talmente elevate (in gran parte dovute agli "allenamenti" del padre nell'infanzia) da convincere della cosa i detective Lassiter e O'Hara. La collaborazione con i due inizia quando Shawn si intromette in un'indagine: i detective sono incuriositi dalle sue intuizioni sul caso, al punto da sospettare che possa esservi coinvolto. Per togliersi dai guai, Shawn inventa la storia dei suoi poteri psichici. In seguito, visto il successo ottenuto, si inventa un lavoro di "investigatore psichico" aprendo con il suo amico d'infanzia Gus un'agenzia a tale scopo (il nome dell'agenzia è Psych, un'abbreviazione di psychic, in inglese sensitivo).
