Tenma Tsukamoto è una studentessa innamorata dell'amore ma anche di un suo compagno di classe, il misterioso e talvolta assurdo Karashima. Ingenua e un po' tonta, Tenma non si accorge invece delle attenzioni che le vengono riservate da Harima, un altro suo compagno di classe dall'aspetto un po' strano e con un passato da teppista. Attorno a questo strano triangolo ruoteranno le storie degli amici e delle amiche dei tre, tra cui spiccheranno la ricca e viziata Eri Sawachika, la sportiva Mikoto Suo e la silenziosa Yakumo Tsukamoto, sorella di Tenma.

La giovane Hazel Grace Lancaster è sopravvissuta ad un cancro ai polmoni grazie all'assunzione di un farmaco sperimentale. A causa di ciò, frequenta un gruppo di supporto per sopravvissuti al cancro, dove incontra Augustus Waters, un ex giocatore di basket a cui è stata amputata una gamba. I due giovani si innamorano e, grazie ad Augustus, Hazel ritrova la voglia di vivere e di sorridere. Ma quando la loro relazione diventa sempre più profonda, Hazel cerca di allontanarlo, per limitare il numero di dolori che causerà quando il male si ripresenterà. Il male ritorna e Hazel viene ricoverata in ospedale con una grave polmonite; in quel momento Augustus le dice di tenere a lei più di quanto si possa preoccupare del dolore che lei potrebbe causargli. Dimessa dall'ospedale, Hazel e Augustus si recano ad Amsterdam per incontrare Peter Van Houten, l'autore del romanzo preferito di Hazel e di Augustus. Ma il destino, scritto nelle stelle, ha in serbo per i due innamorati altre dure prove.

Tutto cambia quando resta coinvolto nelle vicende delle sorelle Saotome, delle valchirie! Takuma viene convocato da Odino per allearsi alle ragazze e difendere il mondo dai demoni e dalla distruzione totale. Il potere delle valchirie deriva dall'amore quindi il ragazzo dovrà vivere con loro e diventare sempre più intimo. La prima con cui cerca di approfondire il rapporto è Natsuki, la più forte. Riusciranno Takuma e le valchirie a salvare il mondo?

Il protagonista della serie è Shawn Spencer, giovane figlio di un ex-poliziotto, che lavora come "consulente sensitivo" con il Dipartimento di Polizia di Santa Barbara. In realtà Shawn non è affatto un sensitivo, ma presenta delle facoltà intuitive talmente elevate (in gran parte dovute agli "allenamenti" del padre nell'infanzia) da convincere della cosa i detective Lassiter e O'Hara. La collaborazione con i due inizia quando Shawn si intromette in un'indagine: i detective sono incuriositi dalle sue intuizioni sul caso, al punto da sospettare che possa esservi coinvolto. Per togliersi dai guai, Shawn inventa la storia dei suoi poteri psichici. In seguito, visto il successo ottenuto, si inventa un lavoro di "investigatore psichico" aprendo con il suo amico d'infanzia Gus un'agenzia a tale scopo (il nome dell'agenzia è Psych, un'abbreviazione di psychic, in inglese sensitivo).
