Un giorno Mutsumi, la misteriosa compagna di classe di Masamune, lo guida alla quinta fornace dell'acciaieria dove incontrano una ragazza che non sa parlare e sembra essere cresciuta come una selvaggia. L'incontro fra i tre sconvolge l'equilibrio del mondo e l'inarrestabile "impulso d'amore" di questi ragazzi stanchi della loro vita quotidiana inizia a scatenare effetti distruttivi.

Il trentaduenne Kafka Hibino fa parte di una squadra speciale addetta allo smantellamento dei resti dei Kaiju, che vengono uccisi dalle forze di difesa. Kafka è amico d'infanzia di Mina Ashiro. I due, tempo addietro, si promisero di entrare nel corpo delle forze di difesa e proteggere il Giappone dai Kaiju. Hibino non riuscì a superare l'esame di ammissione, abbandonando i suoi sogni. Mina, mantenendo la promessa, divenne invece il capitano della III divisione del corpo delle forze di difesa. Un giorno, Kafka affronta uno strano Kaiju con il quale si fonde. Da quel momento il giovane acquisisce la capacità di trasformarsi nel Kaiju numero 8, ottenendo particolari abilità.

La serie racconta di Mahiru Kouzuki, un'artista di grande talento che ha abbandonato la sua passione a seguito delle derisioni subite da bambina dai suoi compagni di classe per un suo murale che ritraeva delle meduse. Ormai adulta, Mahiru incontra Kano Yamanouchi, un'ex idol con un passato tormentato, che la incoraggia a riabbracciare i sogni della sua infanzia. A loro si aggiungono la compositrice Kimura e la V-Tuber Kiui Watase, entrambe demotivate e in fuga delle aspettative della società e del giudizio altrui. Queste quattro ragazze si uniscono per formare il gruppo artistico JELEE, con l'obiettivo di ritrovare la loro creatività perduta e di trovare un nuovo significato nella loro vita.
