Un giorno, trova una lampada magica dalla quale fuoriesce un grosso mostro rosa che si autodefinisce "genio della lampada". Il genio promette al re di realizzare ogni suo desiderio. Il genio, però, è ailurofobo e ogni volta che vede un gatto perde i suoi poteri.     Giulio è un anziano signore. Ha fatto del poker una professione, dimenticando il titolo di avvocato e dedicandosi con impegno a ciò che praticamente è diventato un secondo lavoro: la cura e l’amore per il suo compagno Claudio. Giulio ha una figlia, Valeria, rimasta orfana prestissimo, che da tempo non vive con lui e con cui ha un rapporto difficile ma che si è adattata alla anomala situazione con estrema naturalezza. Valeria ha a sua volta un figlio, Marco, che ha cresciuto da sola, che adora i "nonni" e che ha ereditato la passione del poker, seppur con scarsi risultati. Quando Claudio si ammala gravemente, tutto l’amore viene raccolto da Giulio in una rosa, portata al suo capezzale ogni mattina. In poco tempo i soldi finiscono e Giulio è costretto a licenziare il giardiniere, la cuoca e a vendere persino i mobili, inscenando il bluff perfetto. Come in una pièce teatrale, dirige se stesso nelle diverse mansioni, per non far mancare nulla all'amato Claudio, ignaro della situazione. Ma il suo amore non può bastare, c'è bisogno di altro.
