1920, Irlanda rurale. I gemelli anglo-irlandesi Rachel ed Edward condividono una strana esistenza nella loro fatiscente proprietà di famiglia. Ogni notte, la proprietà diventa il dominio di una presenza sinistra che impone loro tre regole: devono essere a letto entro la mezzanotte; non possono permettere ad un estraneo di superare la soglia di casa; e se si tenta di scappare, la vita dell'altro viene messa a repentaglio. Quando il giovane veterano di guerra Sean torna nel vicino villaggio, viene immediatamente attratto dalla misteriosa Rachel, che a sua volta inizia a infrangere le regole.
