La trama intreccia un misto storia e mito e si incentra sulla leggendaria spada Xuan-Yuan che “l’imperatore giallo” usò per difendere l’antica Cina. Le sorelle Yin e Ning vivono felicmente in un paesino di montagna e giocano spesso con il coetaneo Zhao. La loro serenità vine interrotta una notte dall'improvviso attacco delle forze imperiali. Zhao è innamorato di Ning e chiede alla sorella minore, di lei, Yin, di passarle un messaggio su un incontro, nel quale lui ha intenzione di confessarle il suo amore. Ma Yin ama Zhao e - presa dalla gelosia - fa in modo che i due non si vedano. Quella sera i destini dei tre saranno per sempre segnati: Yin perderà le braccia, tranciate di netto dagli imperiali e così Ning si sentirà in dovere di occuparsi della sorellina, mentre la popolazione del villaggio verrà in parte trucidata, in parte resa schiava, le due fuggiranno per un soffio; Zhao verrà fatto schiavo e portato presso la capitale. Lì egli dimostrerà buone doti da ingegnere e gli sarà permesso di emanciparsi; mentre le due sorelle si manterranno facendo le artiste di strada, inscenando combattimenti... fin quando i loro destini non si incroceranno nuovamente.

Quando lo chiama il presidente degli Stati Uniti per salvare un equipaggio intrappolato in una navicella nell'orbita terrestre, prossima a essere distrutta da una sorta di tempesta di energia, il team composto da Ciclope, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Storm e Quicksilver accetta di rischiare la vita nonostante Mystica, loro leader sul campo, consigli prudenza. Sulle montagne rocciose canadesi, Logan cerca la pace dopo un secolo di guerre e violenza. Silverfox lo ama e lo incoraggia a dar retta alla propria natura umana e a tenere a bada la forza sovrumana e mutante che è in lui, ma il brutale assassinio della donna da parte del fratello Victor, riporta inevitabilmente Logan nelle mani di Stryker, che vuole fare di lui l'Arma X, una macchina da guerra indistruttibile. Nel corso di un'operazione d'indicibile sofferenza, lo scheletro di Wolverine viene rivestito di adamantio e ne esce un essere invulnerabile, il più micidiale degli esperimenti di laboratorio che Stryker sta operando sui mutanti: un cuore di dolore dentro un'impalcatura di rabbia, in attesa di rivolgere la propria furia contro il giusto nemico.
