Bastonati dalla vita, e stanchi di mettersi in gioco perché oramai assuefatti alla sconfitta, per uno strano scherzo del destino saranno costretti a intraprendere un viaggio insieme che li porterà a confrontarsi con il proprio passato, a lottare con i propri demoni e a uscire dalle proprie solitudini. Una banale gara di canottaggio amatoriale li renderà un gruppo coeso, desideroso di un riscatto a tutti i costi. Per vincere bareranno e perderanno in malo modo, ma non sarà una vera sconfitta, perché intanto scopriranno di essere diventati una famiglia che è in grado di trasformare in successo la somma delle loro sconfitte individuali. Una singolare, eccentrica, ma invidiabile famiglia che tutti vorremmo avere come vicini di casa.

Da solo in un teatro parigino dopo una giornata passata a fare audizioni per la commedia che sta per mettere in scena, Thomas si lamenta al telefono della misera performance dei candidati. Nessuno ha la statura necessaria per il ruolo principale, e sta per andarsene quando arriva Vanda, un turbine d'energia, tanto sfrenata quanto intraprendente. Vanda incarna tutto quello che Thomas detesta. È volgare, nevrotica, e non si ferma davanti a niente per avere il suo ruolo. Ma, controvoglia, Thomas le concede l'audizione, e con stupore vede Vanda trasformarsi. Non solo si è procurata costumi e accessori, ma comprende appieno il personaggio (con cui per altro condivide il nome) e sa tutte le battute a memoria. L'audizione si prolunga e acquista sempre maggiore intensità, tanto che l'attrazione di Thomas si tramuta in ossessione...
