Alcuni episodi non vi fanno proprio riferimento, o ve ne fanno in modo molto superficiale, e si concentrano su storie svincolate o sull'approfondimento delle caratteristiche e della storia dei vari personaggi, soprattutto Motoko, Batou, Togusa e Aramaki.

It now seems that they have found a possible suspect in Nanao=A, a man with dubious connections. During his time as Head of Government, he had denied that the group ever existed. La protagonista è Elena Gilbert, una normale ragazza adolescente che vive a Mystic Falls, in Virginia. La sua vita viene sconvolta quando scopre che il suo ragazzo, Stefan Salvatore, è un vampiro, e che è stata adottata. Stefan si accorge che Elena è identica alla prima donna della sua vita, la vampira che trasformò lui e suo fratello Damon Salvatore nel 1864: Katherine Pierce. I due fratelli si innamorano anche di Elena ed entrano a far parte della sua vita.
