Sakaido era un detective famoso per le sue abilità, che però venne condannato alla reclusione dopo essersi vendicato sul colpevole della morte di sua figlia. Pur essendo in prigione, il detective continua a supportare la polizia grazie ad un dispositivo che consente di trasportare la coscienza di una persona all'interno di un mondo virtuale creato sulla base delle tracce di istinto omicida rimasto nei corpi delle vittime. In base alle informazioni presenti all'interno di questo spazio, è possibile individuare l'assassino seriale e più Sakaido approfondisce le sue investigazioni, più le cose si complicano, fino a mettere alla prova i suoi principi e le sue convinzioni.
