Gone Dark is a fiercer, tighter upgrade of their taut grooves, brittle guitar shards, impassioned shouts and clouds of dystopian noise. Not a cry from the darkness but a shout through the darkness, a robust proclamation of resilience and opposition in the face of impending apocalypse. It follows their self-titled debut that was released on the eve that the world stood still, and was followed by a slew of singles which culminated in the the release of EP01 in 2021 and touring in 2022. They graced the cover of New Noise Magazine France and featured in a New York Times article amongst other recognition. The Human Impact arsenal is more formidable than ever thanks to the addition of two more noise-rock veterans: bassist Eric Cooper (Made Out of Babies, Bad Powers) and drummer Jon Syverson (Daughters). Spencer had spent the 2020 Covid lockdown working on a cabin in the East Texas woods and would travel into Austin for informal jam sessions with the pair in the bass player's garage. Friendly blasts through vintage Unsane songs would ultimately result in the rhythm section being fully absorbed into the Unsane and Human Impact lineups for their 2022 European tours.     Fruitcake - One More Slice [1997] (2024) 44.1-24 Country: Norway Genre: Progressive Rock Format: FLAC (*tracks) Quality: Lossless [44,1kHz/24 bit] Time: 57:41 Full Size: 647.36 MB Fruitcake is the Norwegian progressive group led by Paul Sovik, who drums, composes most of the songs and sings. On the previous album 'Room For Suprises' the band finally made a fully professional album full of slow paced melancholy organ-driven prog. It's a personal favorite of mine. On 'One More Slice' the band sounds significantly more 'heavy prog' with numerous axe-man lead guitar passages and riffs by Robert Hauge. The compositions are faster, intenser, more varied and way less moody and lonely sounding. The organ chords and lead synth are less dominant, but still present in classic Fruitcake fashion; retro (or dated in a charming way) and slightly dopey. As if they never heard another song than Genesis' 'Watcher of the Skies'. It makes them stand out and instantly recognizable. I described Fruitcake earlier as progressive rock's favorite slug, but on this album the band is actually quite versatile within its own idiom. Notably, on 'One More Slice' the band also has some really dark organ/guitar riffs, that almost remind of Red-era King Crimson. Fruitcake has always had as its main weakness the dopey and occasional weak vocals of Paul Sovik. And though is voice grew significantly over the years, he also tried to tackle harder vocal lines - which in turn leads to equally average results. In the slower organ-based compositions of 'Room For Suprises' his performance was actually way more charming than in this heavy prog climate. Still, I would warmly recommend this record swarming of full bodied organ/guitar potency and beautiful harmonies and melodies. He called upon some old musical friends, David Rada (drums) and Randy Schuchart (bass) to form the rhythm section of the band he needed. Both of them were plying their trade in the band Silverhill at the time, and the vocalist of that act, Jonathon Fredrick Boring (vocals), decided to hook up with Berick's band project as well. With some help in the songwriting department from LA based artist Kim Fowley the band recorded and released their self-titled debut effort in 1974, and one year of intensive touring to support it followed. Boring was fired after the tour finished, as a result of too much drugs, booze and ego.
