Sakura Mamiya è una ragazza che fin da bambina è in grado di vedere i fantasmi. Rinne Rokudo è un suo misterioso compagno di classe dai capelli rossi che lei crede sia un fantasma, in quanto è la sola in grado di vederlo. In realtà, il ragazzo si rivelerà essere mezzo umano e mezzo shinigami (un dio della morte), con il compito di aiutare le anime smarrite rimaste sulla terra a trasmigrare e trovare finalmente la pace. L’incontro fra i due giovani darà inizio a una stravagante collaborazione che li porterà in giro ad “acchiappare” gli spiriti.
