Moondog è uno scrittore baciato dal genio che dedica la sua esistenza al relax in Florida tra droghe e donne. Fortunatamente, la bella e ricca moglie Minnie lo ama così com'è. Un tragico incidente pone però fine alla vita della donna. Nel suo testamento c'è una clausola a cui Moondog deve attenersi: se vuole mettere le mani sull'eredità, deve completare il nuovo libro pianificato da anni. Darà così via a un ridicola ricerca di ispirazione che gli permetterà di sperimentare le cose più folli e di incontrare i tipi più strani in circolazione...
